What a great day the Royal Entomological Societies (RES) Insect Festival turned out to be! Not that we ever doubted it.

For those of you who don’t know about Insect festival it is a bi-annual event held in York, The aim of Insect Festival is to raise public awareness of insects and entomology, a great opportunity to discover the fascinating world of insects. For more information check the RES website (http://www.royensoc.co.uk/events/insectfestival.htm)

Everything seemed set to make this the best one yet, the weather was brilliant, the grounds of the Hospitium was bathed in fantastic sunshine all day making the marquee a hive of activity throughout the day. There was bug building; face painting, free flower mixes form the Buzzing boarders stall and the chance to go on an insect safari.

The Hospitium was host to many great stalls all insect related there was everything from prehistoric amber, live insects, local entomology societies, conservation trusts to insect inspired cakes and jewellery!

We were outside in the marquee next to our good friend Plymouth’s own spider man Peter Smithers and the people from Buzzing boarders (watch this space for more info on that). We were also lucky enough to be joined by our dear friend Hayley Wiswell, who took time out from her busy schedule of wood ant nest hunting in Scotland to lend us a much appreciated hand so on behalf of us both thank you Hayley.

We had lots of keen bug house builders come along and had some great designs I am always struck at how inventive people can be with rubbish, in fact we had so many great builders that we ran out of rubbish to make them with!

With this years event being such a good one I can’t even imagine how good 2013’s Insect Festival will be!
